What Goes Around Comes Around

Good day! Today we will be reviewing the concept of circular economy. By definition, a circular economy is based on the principles of designing out waste and pollution, keeping products and materials in use, and regenerating natural systems.

The design of circular economy itself is supposed to reduce or, in best case scenarios, completely eradicate any wastes products from our consumption. But is such a thing possible? To further clarify on the concept of circular economy, we can study the below diagram:

So we arrive at the burning question; Can circular economy solve the world’s mounting waste problem? In my humble opinion, it has the potential to be the antidote to our dying Earth that continues to get sicker. It is a great concept that utilizes the efforts of all the inhabitants of our planet, and so if everyone participates, we would be able to solve a major world problem, just like that. The ideas of circular economy is not that complicated, as it is basically rehashing minor solutions and compiling them together into a big, new and innovative concept. With enough participation, especially from leading companies of major industries, we could have our healthy Earth back in no time.

Therein lies the problem, though. Currently, it can be seen that only small businesses are taking the giant leap forward to try and save our planet. The reality is that not enough people are concerned with the state our home is in, as the effects are simply not affecting them. There are even some people who claim that global warming isn't real because their country has fine weather. Is that not the same as saying world hunger doesn't exist because you already ate?

On top of ignorant people, there are also big companies who contribute the most to our collective carbon footprint. These people know, of course, what it is they are doing to the planet. But switching to a more environmentally friendly approach could mean less profits. The rest is history.

However, we must remain ever-optimistic. There are quite a few companies (mostly NGO's or individuals) who decided that something must be done to curb the slowly but steadily growing issue of product waste. Take, for example, the Kenyan woman who turns plastic into bricks.  Or the company that grinds old bread into fine crumbs to be used in new recipes.  Or even all 5 of these companies that are on a mission to turn trash into treasure.

In retrospect, circular economy could be a great solution to the world’s mounting waste problem. All we have to do is put it into practice instead of just theory.

  1. Thanks for your post, sister. I do wonder if there are any local companies that embrace the circular economy in their operations..
